Scorchers back with high Wafcon optimism
Scorchers are back in the country from Angola where they drew 0-0 against the hosts in CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafon) last qualifying round first leg.
The team’s official sponsors National Bank of Malawi and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) officials welcomed the team on Friday evening at the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe.

In an interview after arriving captain Tabitha Chawinga was optimistic of getting a good result in the return leg set for Tuesday at the Bingu National Stadium.
“I have confidence that we will progress in the tournament. The fact that we drew against them away shows we are good.
“We will be playing in front of our fans and that is a plus for us. Not only that, but the players are also hopeful and confident of victory,” she said.

National Bank of Malawi marketing and corporate affairs manager Akossa Hiwa in an interview at KIA said they believe Malawi will make it.
“We are very happy with the performance in Angola. The players really put up a good fight. They displayed discipline which is important.
“Looking forward to Tuesday, we truly believe that it will be a win for the Scorchers, especially playing at home with the morale from the fans. We think they will make history to qualify for the finals,” she said.
FAM president Fleetwood Haiya, who accompanied the team in Angola, was equally optimistic.
“We can make a pronouncement that it is a must win game. I have talked to the players and technical staff to say we don’t have any options.
“The players showed resilience in Angola by holding the hosts. The good news is that National Bank has sponsored the second leg and all the open stands will be free. With the home supporters in large numbers it will be an advantage,” he said.
